The gold standard for obstacle avoidance and pet-owner peace of mind, but aging suction power and no mop make it hard to recommend at full price when newer robots do more for less.
Even after testing dozens of newer robots, the j7+ still avoids pet waste more reliably than most -- we watched it identify and steer around a simulated accident three times in a row without a single failure. The dual rubber extractors handle hair beautifully. But 1,700Pa suction is prehistoric by current standards, the 75-minute battery barely covers a small apartment, and no mopping at all in 2026 feels incomplete. At street prices below $400 it remains a solid vacuum-only pick for small homes with pets. At its $800 MSRP, it is impossible to justify when the Roomba 505 Combo exists.
Key Specs at a Glance
Pros & Cons
What We Like
- + Best-in-class obstacle avoidance identifies pet waste, cords, and shoes before running them over
- + Dual rubber brush extractors handle pet hair without tangles better than any bristle brush design
- + Clean Base auto-empty dock with sealed AllergenLock bags keeps allergens contained for 60 days
- + Low 3.4-inch profile slips under most furniture where taller robots can't reach
What Could Be Better
- − 1,700Pa suction is drastically behind modern robots offering 7,000-20,000Pa — fine for hard floors but struggles on thick carpet
- − No mopping capability at all — vacuum only, so you need a separate solution for hard floor deep cleaning
- − 75-minute battery life is among the shortest in its class and limits single-charge coverage to smaller homes
- − At full $800 MSRP, impossible to justify when the Roomba 505 Combo costs less and does more
